MATHS AND SCIENCE NEWS

On the 14th to the 18th August, students of Sirius College have celebrated The National Science Week. During this week we have had many activities including an incursion. A scientist from an organization called “Mad about Science” ran different sessions for primary and secondary students. He demonstrated different experiments which were educational as well as full of fun. During the incursion, two branches of science were explored; Physics and Chemistry. Prep, Grades 1 & 2 participated in the activities revolving around the topic of Forces and Grade 3 to 8 participated in Chemistry Chaos. The students were rewarded with a certificate of participation at the end of the sessions. Throughout the week, students performed different experiments in their classes. Students also have done various experiments in their classes throughout the week. These experiments were based on different branches of science e.g. Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Geography etc. These science based activities helped students to improve their understanding about different scientific concepts in a fun manner.

The following is feedback from secondary students about the science incursion.

“Watching the polymer bead growing slowly throughout the experiment was interesting. It was also exciting to see how substances change their colours simply by adding cabbage water. It was fun participating in the science incursion.”
Year 8, Nooran Al-Qarakchy

“I learned about chemical reactions during this session. In our group, we had some acids such as vinegar and lemon juice etc. When we put cabbage water into an acid, it turned pink and when it’s added in basic water, it turned blue. It was very interesting to see how cabbage water can be used as an indicator in the experiments. The incursion was very informative and I enjoyed the hands on activities.”
Year 7, Rafl Alaathamy

“The incursion was really interesting. I enjoyed participating in the aspirin experiment and polymers.”
Year 8, Ashlee Kirkpatrick
